Sessions

February 18th Update: The schedules are available for both Saturday and Sunday are available! You will find information about sessions, timing and location. We will have paper copies available on site during the event.

Would you like to be a presenter at Podcamp Toronto 2011? Unlike a conventional conference, at a podcamp anyone can step up and get involved as a presenter; all you need to do is indicate your interest! You don’t need to be an expert — some of the best presentations are nothing more than a circle of chairs and some great discussions! All you need is enthusiasm.

A couple of points to keep in mind:

At podcamps, the “Law of Two Feet” rules. This means that if an audience member isn’t getting what they need at a particular session, they are free to leave the room to check out other sessions. Don’t take it personally.

Secondly, as an “Unconference”, attendees take a decidedly dim view of presentations that are nothing more than a sales pitch for a person or company. Certainly, feel free to mention who you are and what you do, but know where to draw the line.

  • ONLINE ENGAGEMENT FOR THE SOCIAL SECTOR
I’ve been using the Internet to promote social causes for over a decade. I’d be thrilled to develop a session on the use of online marketing for social good. This could include social sector e-campaigning, whether it’s for non-profit organizations, government departments, or citizen’s movements. The point is to “sell” environmental values, equitable societies, and public wellbeing, as opposed to selling commercial products.

I can develop content around best practices in online outreach for social issues. Also, I’d make it practical, with a strong “how to” component, so people will walk away with a number of practical tips they can apply right away. As well, I’d prefer to blend theory and practice, so we can focus on broad principles behind successful interventions, and showcase a few practical examples. I have some great case studies and original data from the United Nations Millennium Campaign, Oxfam GB’s global climate change campaign, the Year of Volunteers Campaign, and the global White Band campaign, among others.

You can see examples of my case studies at: http://www.cugelman.com. Personally, I’d rather co-present with others working in social sector online campaigning. So if anyone wants to collaborate, get in touch.

  • PSYCHOLOGY OF ONLINE DESIGN
You don’t just have to worry about your website’s information architecture, now, you need to also think about your website’s psychological architecture.

For over two years, I studied the psychological design of health behaviour change interventions. During this project, I developed a model to integrate persuasion, marketing, and behaviour change research into a simple model that can be used to describe the psychological architecture of behaviour change websites. I’m glad to host a session on the psychology of the web and interactive technology. I could discuss the psychology of online design, in a broader sense, whether it applies to online campaigns, social media engagement, Facebook app design, or mobile technologies. We could also walk through a series of websites and illustrate the psychology laying behind the surface, and then hold an interactive session where we perform crowdsourced website psycho-analysis.

  • THE GRUELING WORLD OF SOCIAL MEDIA…IT’S NOT FUN & GAMES ANYMORE

With the explosion of social media over the past five years, a lot of businesses have been playing catch-up in trying to figure out how to best optimize, and leverage these online tools.

But with optimization, and leverage comes competition, and strategies on becoming #1.

The Grueling World of Social Media…It’s Not Fun & Games Anymore is an industry perspective on how social media has changed over the past 5 years, and now that it being run rampant with business, how this once powerful way to connect, engage and create change is often misused, and misinterpreted.

    About the speaker:

Josh Muirhead is founder, and marketing trend analyst for Socialmark Media. For the past several years, Josh has been directly involved in the online marketing world, is a guest lecturer on Marketing Trends & Social Media.

  • SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE NEW GREEN

Remember in 2005 when everyone wanted to go ‘Green.’ Businesses pushed to become more environmentally friendly, often not looking at the long term effects, rather to focus on the short term gains.

Although it was an excellent start to a movement, ‘Going Green’ made companies do things without really know what they were doing, and if it was even going to be effective (in some cases, causing more problems then before).

Social Media has become the new ‘Green’ - With businesses jumping into the online communities without any idea of what is going on, what they should be looking for, and most importantly - Why they should even be there.

In this session, Josh Muirhead will discuss how businesses need to look inward before jumping into the world of Social Media, and have a better concept than just “Someone told me I should be on Facebook.”

    About the speaker:

Josh Muirhead is founder, and marketing trend analyst for Socialmark Media. For the past several years, Josh has been directly involved in the online marketing world, is a guest lecturer on Marketing Trends & Social Media.

  • Everything eBooks

I’d like to propose a ‘round table’ discussion about eBooks, eBook communities, how books will be consumed in 2011 and the value of eReading devices vs. general-use tablets.

Other topics in this session could include; pricing models, the rise in self-publishing, what eBooks mean for quality controls, the rise in reading apps and eBooks in the classroom.

About Me: I work for Wattpad (the world’s most downloaded eBook app) and have spoken at Word on the Street (Toronto) and the eBook Summit (New York City). I’ve written articles for The Huffington Post, Girls in Tech and Electric Literature. I received my MA from the University of Toronto and obtained a BA from University of King’s College in Halifax.

  • TITLE
The Internet is now done its heavy partying and has to find a real job.

    DESCRIPTION
I like to think that the Internet is going through the same stages of development as any other human being.

First, it was a cute and awkward little thing…couldn’t walk, didn’t really understood its environment, and was only really pre-occupied with one thing. Surviving.

Then, it hit puberty…and the first thing that came to mind was sex! Porn sites galore!

Then, it entered its twenties and became more social and partied like it was 1999…or 2004.

Now, it’s hitting the big 3-0…and the Internet is slowing down a little. It doesn’t mind “dropping-the-hammer” every so often, but for the most part the Internet has “been there, done that.”

However, there’s a budding element of Intellectual Curiosity ever present…which is why websites like TED, Poptech! and FORA.tv are growing in popularity.

    But, what’s next?…

Will it become Prime Minister? A big corporate entity trying to run the World? or sit in the background and not annoy anyone?

Let’s investigate this analogy a little further and see what the Internet will become now that it’s grown up.

    Don’t Forget The Content Team

    Description
Does your content team curse their tools and that CMS you spent oodles of money on? This presentation may just have the answers to your problem…

Over the last decade we’ve gotten pretty good at building web properties that are highly optimized for our site visitors. We focus on the visitor from the very beginning and advocate for them through the entire development process. Unfortunately, there’s a user group out there that often gets ignored – the internal content team. They can be anyone from a journalist in a high paced newsroom to a roving blogger, but the tools they use and their ability to get content onto the web easily and efficiently can be a major challenge. More often than not, they get overlooked in the development process and end up fighting with tools that make their lives miserable. Fear not, with a few easy tips and tricks we can turn things around.

This presentation will shed light on the current crop of CMS problems that make it unnecessarily hard for content teams to get their jobs done, as well as go over a number of tactics and activities that fix this problem. With a little bit of advanced planning and foresight, it’s more than possible to roll out a CMS based site and toolset that is efficient to use and loved by its users.

Let’s talk about the successes and the shortfalls. How do we move forward to get our government to embrace gov 20 and open data. And how do we ensure that the citizen-led movement keeps growing?

  • DESIGN FOR EVIL

Kaleem Khan brings his Interaction Design Conference talk straight from Boulder, Colorado, to PodCamp Toronto. This session is recommended for anyone who wishes to address day-to-day ethical challenge and begin thinking about how to best bring ethics to our work.

Interaction design (IxD) and user experience (UX)design have no ethics guidelines. Practitioners take shortcuts, engage in questionable practices and projects, and act without thought. These all have a direct impact on ethical lapses and open the door to mistreatment of clients, peers, research, and the public.

Other disciplines (architecture, industrial design, medicine) and social sciences (anthropology, psychology, sociology) have long-established ethics frameworks. Behaviour and work are shaped by ethical principles and practices that aim to protect stakeholders’ welfare and govern how they are treated.

Issues and scenarios discussed include: Privacy, control, digital, physical, social, and emotional impact.

  • 10 NO NONSENSE WAYS SOCIAL MEDIA CAN ACTUALLY BE USED IN YOUR BUSINESS

Who has time for #@!*%$ social media? This question is often posed by busy worker bees - especially those in traditional, slow moving industries - that struggle to keep up with the demands of their daily operations, let alone spend time updating their Twitter status.

Examples include contests, customer service, crisis management and integrating web 2.0 right into your business operations.

  • Digital Publishing: The Common Grounds

With the release of the iPad nearly a year ago, digital publishers were initially skeptical of how this new platform would compete and add to the much declining publishing world. This session is aimed at how, not only is the industry picking up, but specializing and the iPad, as well as new the onslaught of new digital devices, is allowing developers new opportunities at building on a platform and with an industry that has historically been adverse to them.

Publishers are only now finding that the group that they have generally fought with over the internet is their saviour on this new medium. Please join me on a brief presentation on where I see the industry going both short and long term, then stay for an open discussion on voicing your opinion on what is currently a very hot topic.

  • Social Media Policy for Your Staff – if you have them, you need one.
    - If your staffers are tweeting, FBing etc, on behalf of your company (@Jodi_PodCamp, for example) there is no question, you need to provide social media guidelines for them
    - If your staffers are not officially engaging in SocMed for your company but they are wildly known to be associated with your company, you need to provide social media guidelines for them
    - If you staffers have distinct online personalities (@Jodi_PodCamp + Jodi_loves_Hamilton) and you think they are quite savvy in doing this, you still need to provide social media guidelines for them

Social Media blunders are common because they are so simple to step into. People are much more critical and quick to judge behind the keyboard than any other medium. You want your team to be prepared to avoid and nagivate conversations & situations you don’t want your brand involved in.

Tricia Mumby of Mabel’s Labels will share some of the Rules of Engagement she has provided to Mabel staffers that tweet & engage officially, and unofficially.

Customer support via social channels has become a hot discussion topic as companies continue to explore new ways to assist their customers. But once a social support initiative has been planned and engagement begins, the strategic approach will need to continually evolve as the community grows. In particular, as organizations spread their support efforts across various channels, the ability to scale begins to rely on the power of existing follower communities and the ability to integrate these platforms.

We’ll provide some insights around planning for growth, integrating platforms and empowering your community to assist with social support.

  • Digital influence: how brands and individuals can understand and leverage their “Klout”

2010 was the year of the influencer. Everywhere you turned you saw companies trying to capitalize on the networks of social media influencers, and tools like Klout emerged to try to quantitatively measure a person’s online footprint.

I want to discuss how I’ve built a network for both my company and myself, and the trend of digital influence. How do you build up a relevant network online? What opportunities can arise once you have a network in place? And what should you avoid if you want to stay relevant and informative?

  • Measuring What Matters
“But how do you measure this stuff?” We’ve heard it asked a hundred times. Heck, we may have asked it ourselves. But it’s not that it can’t be measured. Online media is oozing with information. Direct measures. Inferred social signals. The amount of data is enormous, and hence our paralysis by analysis. Let’s sit down and talk about how to stop counting what can be counted and actually start measuring what matters.

Rob Clark (@theelusivefish), Director of Insights and Measurement will be waxing eloquent on the subject. Maybe he’ll be doing so in a room with some PPT. Maybe he’ll be doing it in the hallway with a laptop. Doesn’t matter. He won’t shut up on the subject, but he definitely welcomes others to come rap a spell.

    ====

    Disclosure Quandries
If you ‘like’ a page for a product, the master brand of which is an employer, do you have to disclose? Can you even disclose? What if you’re ragging on a client’s competitor with good cause? What if you’re a brand and the folks you’ve outreached to keep forgetting to disclose. Let’s talk about just how tricksy it is to be transparent.

Rob Clark (who also happens to be founder of @disclzme - http://disclz.me but promises to leave the sales pitch at the door and dig into the ethical heart of the matter)

  • Creators, Consumers, and Control

On the free web, if you have a connection, you have a voice. Anyone can write a blog post, upload a video, or comment on the work of others. But the free web isn’t as free as it once was. Huge companies like Apple, Google, and Facebook are increasingly controlling the means of communication. Is consolidation online inevitable? Or, in a Web 2.0 world, do consumers (who are also often creators) have the real power?

    Panelists:
Diana Galligan is a web site and interactive properties producer and current Masters student in media.
Cameron Tulk is currently completing his Masters in media production at Ryerson University. Before returning to school, he worked as an editor at The Mark News.

  • Tweeting an election: A case study in social media journalism

The 2010 municipal election was an exciting time, not least of all for the City of Vaughan, which had just come through one of the most tumultuous terms in its history.

After switching from a weekly newspaper to a monthly lifestyle magazine earlier in the year, the editorial team at Vaughan Today had to figure out how to bring this critical election to the people within the constraints of their new format.

Turns out social media was the answer. Reporter Josh Freeman shares insights and lessons from the experience and asks participants to weigh in as well.

    Part presentation, part discussion.
